He serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of The Blood Connection, Inc. (TBC), a not-for-profit volunteer blood program locally governed by a volunteer board of trustees. Hart joined TBC in 1998, and under his leadership the company has continued its outstanding heritage of commitment and service to our community. Hart is a blood banking expert backed by over 40 years of experience. He managed hospital and commercial clinical laboratories through the years, and always had a particular interest in genetics, immunology, and blood marker diversity. In 1982, he obtained a specialist certification in blood banking technology and officially began a career in the field of blood banking. He first served as technical director of Sarasota Community Blood Bank, a regional blood center covering a portion of the lower west coast of Florida, but was soon appointed administrative director. As President and CEO of The Blood Connection, Hart continues the company’s heritage of delivering on its mission: to ensure an adequate, safe, and cost-effective blood supply for upstate healthcare partners. Under his leadership, TBC has steadily increased its ability to collect, process, test, and distribute blood components. Blood collections have tripled. New collection centers have been constructed in Seneca, Easley, Greenville, Greenwood, and Spartanburg, and a modern state-of-the-art headquarters and biologics processing center was constructed in Piedmont, South Carolina. Hart is focused on quality and has the vision of TBC as one of the most respected and accomplished blood centers in the nation. He is particularly proud of TBC’s ability to address the third element of its mission, cost-effectiveness. He credits The TBC Board of Trustees, his management team, and all TBC staff for performance above and beyond expectations that allows TBC to offer many of the lowest blood service fees in America. Born in 1948, Hart grew up in the small Western Colorado town of Cedaredge. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology from the University of Colorado and pursued post-graduate studies in business administration at Florida Atlantic University. Hart contributed to two books published by the Florida Association of Blood Banks, Certified Donor Services Specialist Training Manual (1991) and The Changing Frontier (1992). He is also an experienced speaker in the blood banking industry. He currently serves on the national board of Community Blood Centers Risk Retention Group (a provider of professional and general insurance coverage for community blood centers). His past community service includes board positions for The Family Counseling Center, Sarasota Florida, Donate Life South Carolina, The Foundation for America’s Blood Centers, and The Rotary Club of Sarasota Bay. He is a past member of The Rotary Club of Greenville and is a five-time Paul Harris Fellow. He also serves on blood center trade association boards and is TBC’s voting representative for America’s Blood Centers, Blood Centers of America, and The American Association of Blood Banks. He is married to Patti Hart, a registered nurse. They have three daughters and three grandchildren.
